Former Ohio State Senator and national co-chair for Bernie Sander’s 2020 campaign, Nina Turner is a fierce advocate and thought leader for working people across the U.S. Turner in 2023 founded the national nonprofit We Are Somebody, with a mission to lift the poor and working poor out of poverty and to advocate for unionized labor. She made history in 2005 as the first woman to represent ward one on the Cleveland City Council, and again in 2008 as the first African American woman to serve as a state senator in Ohio’s 25th District. A lifelong promoter of the power of education, Turner taught African American History, U.S. History, Urban Studies, and Political Science at Cuyahoga Community College.
